My first time in Hawaii. Any of the islands. I went alone.
I spent most of the day in a beach chair just taking it in. The waves were rough so I only got my toes wet. That was enough.
What I kept coming back to was the lava rock. It is everywhere on that island, for miles, this ancient black rock just sitting alongside everything green and turquoise and warm. I found a lava cliff along the shore and I could not stop looking at it.
So I painted it. Soft and hazy the way the light felt that afternoon. The shore curving away into the mist. The green at the edge. The rock holding its ground.
Original oil on panel, painted and mounted inside an Altoids tin. About 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Signed on the back. Ships carefully packed.
